Art Work: The “HaeTae” is a mythical creature with a muscular lion’s body. It often has a bell around its neck and intricate scales covering its body. The haetae represents protection from fire. It is nationally recognized in historical contexts as a protector of a house, and more broadly, a nation.

“Here there is intimate play between insects, fruit, and vegetation, painted with delicate lightness of touch. The point of view is mostly at ground level. Nearly abstract butterflies, somewhat realistic wasps, beetles, frogs and praying mantises are busy in the foliage. Although these paintings were made in the spirit of Korean classical art, the expected color choices do not always apply--for example, vegetation can be blue.
This freedom with color is characteristic of Oh’s work. Other liberties are taken as well--2 mice on all fours among the leaves, are dressed in bride and groom clothing and share a piece of melon. Wit--often partially concealed--plays off the classic Chochungdo genre created by the Korean poet and artist Sin Saimdang in the 16th century. This humor has the playfulness of whimsy.”
