        The composer Steve Reich wrote about music, “Now, in the 21st century, we live in an age of remixes.” Yet, what can be said of music can equally be applied to the realm of paintings. To reanimate the free-for-all exuberance of postmodernism, painters have been reaching back to old traditions and remixing them with contemporary styles. The Rainbow Group Show includes 15 artists, Pema Rinzin, Lori LaMont, Evie Zimmer, Kate Oh, Irina Rodnikoff, Kenji Hirata, Katy Fischer, Laetitia Guyon, Shamona Stokes, David Ellis, Deirdre Swords, Florencia Sȧnchez, Kunsang Kyirong, Pema Dolkar and Rebecca Donner Winsor. Together, they bring some of the most exciting recent art pieces that straddle the boundary between the ancient traditions and contemporary pop art, is a case study of remix working its magic. 

One of the most affable takes on tradition can be seen in the painting “Light” by Korean-born Kate Oh. Within the confines of an intimate size, the artist brings to life a pop-art rendering of a flower which calls to mind the shape and appearance of a delicate chrysanthemum. The flower is traditionally popular in Korea and, depending on the color, can have many meanings. In this painting, however, the traditional flower is transmuted into constituent parts, brightly colored lines and dots, as if exploded by an bolt of energy. Here, as in Rinzin's “Peace and Energy,” the coloration is expertly controlled, achieving the heightened effect of a print. Yet one should take note of the unusual material of Oh's composition – mixed media on mulberry paper, wrapped on wooden panel. A popular choice as a decorative art paper, mulberry paper is of a diaphanous texture, and is rarely used for painting due to the level of control required of the artist. But this painting has sublimated the rough original appearance of the substrate into an even appearance which is in tune, both materially and figuratively, with the floral essence of its subject matter.

Kate Oh Gallery에서 전시중인 그룹전 <Rainbow Group Show> (March 13-30, 2022)는 빛의 물리학(Physics of the Light)이 어떻게 예술로 묘사되는지를 보여주고 있다. 과학자들의 위대한 발상의 원천은 '빛'이었다. 여러 훌륭한 작품들은 무지개를 통해서 바로 이 '빛'을 그리고 있는데, 이 가운데 특히 케이트 오의 작품에서 빛의 물리학과 생명의 관계를 잘 읽을 수 있다.

케이트 오의 "Light"는 먼 과거로부터 현재 진행중인 시간의 움직임을 포착하고 있다. 암흑을 배경으로 온갖 색깔의 둥근 점들과 곡선의 띠들이 어느 한 점에서 방사형으로 퍼져나오고 있다. 태초의 암흑의 텅 빈 공간 속에서 일어난 빅뱅(Big Bang)으로부터 빛과 시간이 태어나 지금에 이르고 있는 모습이다. 둥근 점들은 빛의 양자설, 곡선의 띠들은 빛의 파동설과 회절, 각자의 크기는 시간, 그리고 온갖 색들은 빛의 파장과 진동수에 따른 색의 탄생을 보여주고 있다.

케이트 오의 작품은 눈에 보이는 것뿐만 아니라 그 너머에 있는 것을 보여주고 있다. 빛이 갖는 물리학적 성질들이 모여 하나의 꽃봉우리를 이루고 있는 것이다. 꽃이 피어나는 장면은 시대와 인종과 지역을 막론하고 고대로부터 우리 인류문화를 통해 이어온 "생명"의 모티프이다. 우리 인간의 생명, 탄생, 환희이며 그 역사이다.

우리는 케이트 오 갤러리의 그룹 전시회 "Rainbow Group Show"에서 여러 작가들이 그려낸 무지개 속에서 저마다의 독특한 빛을 본다. 우리는 '빛을 보는' 것이다. "see the light"라는 영어의 어휘는 의미심장하다. 사전적 풀이에는 단순히 '빛을 보다'라는 의미 이외에도 '세상에 나오다(come into existence), 태어나다(be born)'라는 의미도 가지고 있다. 케이트 오의 작품에서 나는 '생명'을 보았다.

알버트 아인슈타인(Albert Einstein)은 "지식보다 상상력이 더 중요하다. (Imagination is more important than knowledge.)"라고 말했다. 케이트 오의 'light'는 아인슈타인의 말처럼 상상력이 얼마나 중요한지를 보여주는 멋진 작품이다.
